Ambulance services from Mullingar are being redirected to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe this lunchtime.
A huge increase in patients attending the Accident and Emergency at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar resulted in the facility being taken off call.
There were reports that at one stage yesterday 23 people were on trolleys waiting to be admitted.
Ambulances are being redirected to A and E departments in Ballinasloe, Tullamore and Portlaoise as a result.
A spokesperson for Portiuncula Hospital told Galway Bay FM News that the Accident and Emergency unit is operating as normal with no major disruptions.
As of this lunchtime, 12 people are still waiting to be seen in Mullingar while one person is on a trolley in Portiuncula Hospital.
