The Eye Cinema in Wellpark is screening Richard Wagner’s opera, Götterdämmerung by live transmission from The Metropolitan Opera, New York this Saturday, starting at 5pm.
Götterdämmerung is the climax of Wagner’s great Ring Cycle of four operas, which ends with Brünnhilde’s famous immolation and the burning of Valhalla, home of the gods.
As the director explains, the opera “is about Brünnhilde in society, her journey as a character, and her role as the heroine who must restore balance to the world. The more the story progresses, the more it moves away from the realm of the gods to focus on the power and ambition of human beings”.
This production features top American talent, with soprano Deborah Voigt as Brünnhilde, tenor Jay Hunter Morris as Siegfried and bass baritone Eric Owens as Alberich.
The Met’s production of the Ring Cycle has been directed by the renowned director Robert Legpage and the New York Times described Götterdämmerung as his “best work in the $16 million Ring production” describing it as “high-tech traditional”.
People are advised that Götterdämmerung will start at 5pm rather than the usual 6pm and early arrival is advised.
