MAYO EARTHQUAKE COULD PRODUCE GALWAY TREMORS

Date Published: 06-Jun-2012
The magnitude 4 earthquarke which struck off the coast of Mayo this morning could have caused tremors reaching as far as the Galway area.
It happened around 80 or 90 kilometres west off Belmullet - just before 9am.
The British Geological Survey has officially confirmed the quake measured magnitude 4 on the Richter Scale.
Kieran Hickey, Lecturer in Physical Geography at NUI Galway, says the tremors from an earthquake of this strength could have been felt in Galway and along the West coast.
However the NUIG expert says that any resulting tsunami effect would be extremely minor.
