A man in his fifties has been taken to hospital after he was rescued from the water in Connemara.

The man, who was gathering seaweed, got into difficulty when he fell into the water at Connemara Island golfcourse near Leitir Mor, at about 3 this afternoon.

Members of Costello Bay coastguard came to the man's aid and brought him ashore within a half an hour after being alerted by locals.

He was unconscious when taken to University Hospital Galway where he is being treated for hypothermia.
