Galway and other counties in the West have the lowest number of social workers despite having the highest rate of child admissions to pyschiatric institutions.

Councillor Brian Walsh says 200 new social workers were recruited across the State following the publication of the Ryan Report into incidents of child abuse in Irish institutions.

Only 40 of these have been assigned to the HSE West region.

Councillor Walsh says funding is need to employ more social workers in the West.
