Loughrea derelict site to be cleaned up

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A derelict site on the Athenry Road in Loughrea may be transformed into a green field amenity. At this month's meeting of the Loughrea Municipal District, councillors said the site near the Loughrea Hotel and Spa at the entrance to the town has become a magnet for anti-social behaviour. The 1.5 acre plot of land became derelict after a proposal to build a swimming pool on the site was abandoned. Councillor Pat Hynes expressed concern about a lack of fencing around the field, and says it needs to be re-seeded and used as a park or green space. Director of Services Jim Cullen says he will bring the issue to the council's corporate services section to have the site levelled and tidied. Cathaoirleach Michael ‘Moegie' Maher says councillors are expecting an update on plans for the site in the coming weeks.
