Lack of space compounding Galway A&E crisis
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation says the lack of space at University Hospital Galway is the main reason behind long delays in the A&E unit. Last night, patients reported having to wait more than 12 hours for treatment at the emergency department. Meanwhile, the numbers waiting on trollies and wards at UHG last month compared to July 2013 have risen by more than a half. That's according to figures compiled by the INMO. The data shows that 446 people were waiting on trolleys and in wards at the hospital last month, compared to 295 in July 2013 The organisation is now calling on the new Minister for Health to tackle the issue. INMO representative UHG's A&E department, Ann Burke, says more staff won't solve the space issue.
