Construction work on a state-of-the-art €3 million community centre in Knocknacarra is on target to commence next February.

The new facility at Cappagh Park – which will include an Olympic-sized basketball court, a multi-purpose performance space, meeting rooms, changing rooms, offices, canteen and a rooftop viewing deck – was first mooted 15 years ago.

At a presentation to local area councillors, Galway City Council confirmed that every target in the process to date has been met and that finance is in place, ready for drawdown for commencement of construction works next February.

Councillor Peter Keane told the Galway City Tribune: “I am delighted with progress on this much needed project for the community of Knocknacarra and I have full confidence in the design team to deliver the project on time, and importantly, on budget.

“It is encouraging that expressions of interest have been received from upwards of 11 contractors, and tenders will be invited in the coming weeks. This will allow for a contractor to be chosen early in January, with a contract commencement date for February.

“A period of one year will be allowed in the contract for completion of the works, which is expected in February 2013.

“It has been a long and arduous campaign for the delivery of this much-needed centre, which will cater for all sections of the community and not just sporting enthusiasts.

“Due credit must go to the people who have campaigned tirelessly over the last 15 years or so for the delivery of Knocknacarra Community Centre,” said Cllr Keane.

Independent local area councillor Donal Lyons – who has been involved in the campaign for a community centre since 1995 – said he was delighted with the progress.

“Knocknacarra has trebled in size since the campaign began … there is now a population of around 18,000. It’s long overdue,” he said.
