ISLANDERS FURIOUS AT INIS MOR LEVY

Date Published: 25-Oct-2011
Islanders on Inis Mor are angry that controversial new bye-laws for two harbours were passed with amendments by the County Council last night.
There will be an annual 5 euro charge for multiple passenger journeys while the proposed cargo charges have been dropped.
Up to 300 islanders protested outside County Buildings yesterday in advance of the vote on the harbour charges at the monthly council meeting.
Mayor of County Galway Michael 'Mogie' Maher proposed the amendments to the controversial bye-laws and said it was the fairest outcome for the islanders.
However manager of Comharchumann Forbatha Árann Teo Cathy Ní Ghóill says the islanders strongly disagree.
