The Health and Safety Authority says it does not have the powers to intervene in a bid to address a large hole in the Oranhill housing estate in Oranmore.

It follows the recent lodging of an official complaint by Galway West Senator Fidelma Healy Eames who said the authority had agreed to intervene.

However the HSA has moved to clarify that despite the complaint, the area concerned is not a place of work and as such is outside of its remit.

The Oranhill Estate, which was built in 2002, has been the site of a large hole for around six years, which is several metres deep in places.

Local residents have raised concerns that it poses a serious safety risk.
