Guidelines set up following Savita's death to be monitored
Galway Bay fm newsroom - It's been confirmed a number of new guidelines on sepsis and handovers between medical staff are being implemented nationwide following the death of Savita Halappanavar at UHG a year ago.
Ms Halappanavar, who was 17 weeks pregnant, died at University College Hospital Galway of sepsis following a miscarriage.
A HIQA report found her death could have been prevented on 13 separate occasions.
It made 34 recommendations - among them, the implementation of a Sepsis Management guideline and a Clinical Handover guideline.
Professor Hillary Humphries is the Chair of the National Clinical Effectiveness Committee and is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the guidelines.
The head of the HSE Tony O'Brien says a review group has been set up to implement the recommendations of the three different reports into Savita's death.
He was speaking in advance of this evening's special behind-closed-doors meeting of the West/North West Hospitals group to discuss the case following the publication of the HIQA report.
Mr O Brien says the board meeting will consider all the findings and recommendations and identify what further action needs to be taken.
