GOVERNMENT DEFENDS STANCE ON GALWAY TDs LOST AT SEA SCHEME

Date Published: 04-Feb-2010
The Government is defending its stance on the findings and recommendations of the Lost at Sea Investigation by the Ombudsman.
The scheme was established in 2001 by the former Minister for Marine - and current Galway West TD - Frank Fahey to replace boats lost at sea.
A family in Donegal complained to the Ombudsman after their application for aid was rejected on the grounds it was made after the deadline.
Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly has criticised the scheme and recommended the Byrne family should receive 250 thousand euro in compensation.
A debate on the Ombudsman's report into the Byrne's complaint regarding inadequate advertising of the scheme is taking place in the Dáil this afternoon
