Overall crime in the county has dropped by 20 percent compared to last year, but the number of burglaries is on the increase.

That's according to crime figures released today at a meeting of the county joint policing committee.

There were 4, 815 incidents in the first 8 months of this year.

However, burglaries are up 7 percent on last year, with 328 reported incidents between January and August of this year.

Chief Superintendent Michael O' Sullivan says a high number of arrests is one factor that has led to an overall decrease in crime across the county.
