Young Galway woman facing potential prison sentence over money laundering offence

The accused is going back into custody in Dóchas women's prison at a time when it is operating at a capacity of 124%, and when there are 14 prisoners sleeping on mattresses on the floor
A 24-year-old woman facing a potential prison sentence for money-laundering has been told she will have to go back to the High Court if she wants to be released on bail.
Tamara Olaye, with an address at 163 Fearran Rí, Doughiska, has already pleaded guilty to an offence of moneylaundering, which is contrary to Section 7 of the Moneylaundering and Terrorist Financing Act – an offence involving cash – committed on dates between July 21, 2022 and March 11, 2024 at the Permanent TSB branch in Galway Shopping Centre.
Her case was due to be heard at Galway Circuit Court but it had to be adjourned because of the withdrawal of services by solicitors in dispute with the Department of Justice over changes to legal aid fees and the way fees are administered.
Barrister Brendan Browne BL told the court that he did not have instructions from the solicitor involved and, as a result, he found himself in an invidious position.
He explained his client has been in custody on this matter alone for an extended period, and the Probation Services wish to continue to engage with her.
Mr Browne asked if the court would permit him to bring an application for bail, at a point in the future when circumstances would allow.
Judge Brian O'Callaghan said the court noted the accused found herself in custody because she did not comply with bail conditions set down by the High Court.
He said any future application for bail would have to be made to the High Court.
However Judge O'Callaghan said he most certainly would allow the defence to remind the court of the circumstances of this remand order.
He said the accused was going back into custody in Dóchas women's prison at a time when it is operating at a capacity of 124%, and when there are 14 prisoners sleeping on mattresses (on the floor).
Judge O'Callaghan informed the court that any person on remand does not have access to the full facilities of the prison.
Tamara Olaye was then remanded in custody to appear again before Galway Circuit Court on November 25.
