GALWAY TD WANTS CHANGE TO ASYLUM SYSTEM

A Galway politician is calling for a comprehensive review of the system of direct provision accommodation for asylum seekers.

Galway West T.D Derek Nolan raised the issue in the Dáil this week.

Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn, responded on behalf of the Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter.

Minister Quinn says there are important reasons why there is often a delay in processing asylum seekers' applications.

The Minister added that a more streamlined process to determine refugee status is now being implemented which will provide results in a faster and more straight forward way.
