Galway forests funding boost

A host of Galway’s best-known woods and forest trails are to receive funding to improve their pathways and to repair the damage caused by a number of recent high-profile storms.
They have been included in a €4 million investment package in Coillte recreational sites nationwide in 2025, with targeted funding allocated to enhance and protect woodland amenities
The Galway sites receiving maintenance and storm repair funding in 2025 include Derroura Mountain Bike Trail in Connemara; Aghrane Woods near Ballygar, Monivea Woods, Mountbellew Woods, Portumna Forest Park; Cong; Inchagoill on Lough Corrib, and Rosturra and Derrygill Woods, both near Woodford.
The investment, announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary, forms part of the Government’s ongoing strategic partnership with Coillte to improve and maintain public forest trails and outdoor amenities.
A total of €2.6 million will go towards new trail infrastructure and maintenance at 169 sites, with a further €1.4 million allocated to repair damage caused by Storm Eowyn.
The news was welcomed by Galway East Deputy Albert Dolan – particularly wirth the inclusion of his local Monivea Woods.
“Monivea Woods has always been a place of nature, heritage and wellbeing for local families, walkers, and visitors. This funding will ensure it remains safe, accessible and welcoming for all,” he said.
“Monivea and many of our local forest areas took a hit during Storm Eowyn earlier this year. I’ve been in close contact with local stakeholders and Coillte to ensure these areas receive the support they need. I’m delighted to see that reflected in this package,” Deputy Dolan added.
