GALWAY FISHING INDUSTRY SECURE FOLLOWING EU QUOTA DECISION

Date Published: 15-May-2012
The Galway fishing industry and coastal community will be significantly strengtened following an EU decision to block the privitisation of fishing quotas.
That's according to Galway West TD Sean Kyne who says it's vital that quotas are controlled and managed within the state to sustain local fishing sectors.
The plan for privatisation was blocked by a council of ministers this week.
The European Commission had made the proposal in a bid to allow trading on an open market.
Deputy Sean Kyne says the move will further support the creation of jobs with plans already underway for the Aran Island/Connemara region where 500 positions could come on board.
