A Ballinasloe couple had numerous reasons – and three in particular – to celebrate at the weekend, as they marked in some style their respective big birthdays and 63 years of wedded bliss.

Paul and Tess Lyons from Mackney, Ballinasloe, were married on February 17 1963, meaning they have just celebrated yet another wedding anniversary in the last couple of weeks.

But this year was especially meaningful for the popular couple because Tess recently celebrated her 90th birthday on February 17 – no coincidence that this was also the date of her wedding anniversary – and Paul will follow suit, turning 90 on June 29.

Both of them are native Galwegians and have lived in the county all of their lives.

Tess (née Hynes) is originally from Ballinderreen and Paul is from Kiltormer, but they have resided in Ballinasloe since 1960 and have been an integral part of the local community for over six decades.

Together they have five children — Kevina, Enda, Colm, Celine and Vincent, all of whom were present for the birthday/wedding anniversary party — and they are the proud grandparents to 13 grandchildren as well.

Paul and Tess were surrounded by so many members of their extended family and friends as they celebrated this triple milestone in Gullane’s, Ballinasloe last Saturday evening.

In all, 24 family members attended – half of them flying in to attend from Italy, Germany and the UK – all there to celebrate a long and happy marriage...with two very significant birthdays to boot.
