Bus and rail passengers in Galway have escaped any major fare hikes since the economic crisis hit.

Figures provided by Bus Eireann and Iarnrod Eireann show that Galway routes have had the least fare increases in the period between 2008 and 2013.

According to the Irish Independent, there has been no increase in Bus Eireann fares from Dublin to Galway between January 2008 and January 2013.

The adult month return expressway ticket remains at 19 euro.

This is in stark contrast with the Dublin to Waterford Bus Eireann service which has seen a 21 percent increase in the period.

It's believed bus and rail services in areas such as Galway have escaped the worst of the increases mainly due to private sector competition.
