Speed limit to increase at notorious 'trap'

The speed limit will be increased at a notorious ‘speed trap’ on a main artery into the city.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII, formerly NRA) has proposed to increase the speed limit on the N17 at Two Mile Ditch.
It will increase the maximum speed at this stretch of the Galway to Tuam Road, effectively bringing the higher speed limit closer to the city.
It will be welcomed by motorists, who have been issued with speeding fines at this location in the past.
That stretch of road currently has a 50kph limit, changing from 100kph to 50kph at the city boundary.
The TII has proposed to extend the 100kph on the Tuam Road closer to the city, and then it will reduce to a 60kph limit until it turns to 50kph nearer the Font (Fleming’s) Junction.
The change was revealed at the latest meeting of Oranmore/Athenry Municipal District.
Senior Engineer at Galway County Council, Máire Ní Chíonna confirmed the TII’s plans for Two Mile Ditch was part of an overall country-wide speed limit review of national roads. That stretch of road is notorious for speed vans, and several politicians in the past called for it to be increased. For the rest of the speed limits story, see this week's Galway City Tribune.
