NUIG Mystics are right back in the hunt for promotion back to the Super League after winning both games on a double-fixture weekend for them, but they were the only Galway side to taste victory as Moycullen and both Maree teams fell to defeat.

The Students bounced back from defeat in their last league game three weeks ago against Ulster University Elks to storm to a comprehensive win on Saturday afternoon.

The game – and their game the following day against Tipperary Knights – was moved to the Ballinfoile Castlegar Neighbourhood Centre, and the new surroundings suited them just fine in both games.

They got their weekend off to a perfect start, opening-up an 8-point gap (20-12) against Templeogue at the end of the first quarter, and they extended their lead to 12 points (39-27) at half-time.

Not only did they hold the Dublin side’s fightback at bay in the third quarter, the actually extended their lead to 20 points (54-34), and were able to see out the game in the fourth quarter while keeping some energy in reserve for the following day.

Top scorers: R Carmody (16), K Alves (13), K Lyons (11).

 Tipperary Knights 53

Having won that cross-conference game on Saturday, Mystics doubled-down with a crucial conference derby win on Sunday, getting the better of Tipperary Knights.

The Galway side are in the tougher of the two groups – the weekend double success sees them join Portlaoise and Castleisland at the top of the table on 12 points in the Southern Conference; while in the Northern Conference, Ulster Elks are clear at the top of the table on 15 points, six (two wins) ahead of their nearest rivals.

The exertions of Saturday were showing against the Knights as the home side trailed 19-14 at the end of the first quarter, but they dug deep in the second-quarter to overturn that deficit and lead by four (31-27).
