From on the beat to running the street in the same day

A Galway garda is set to retire after 31 years in the most unforgettable fashion.

Inspector Brendan ‘Benny’ O’Grady will say goodbye to the force after three decades but there will be other things running through his mind.

As if the emotions of leaving your work place after that long isn’t enough, Benny will also be completing a full marathon on the same day.

On August 3, he will be running to Mill Street Station scrapping the short route for the scenic one.

Starting in Kinvara, he will head into Ardrahan. Benny will then go to Kilcolgan, then to Clarinbridge, Oranmore, Renmore, up through Lough Atalia and the Claddagh via the Salthill Prom and finally arrive at his desk in Mill Street - we’re out of breath even thinking about it.

He’s doing it all in aid of Little Blue Heroes and Galway RNLI combining his passion for fundraising, work and running all in one.

An Garda Siochana spoke about the inspiring inspector asking people to support him on his trek.

They said: “Brendan ‘Benny’ O’Grady will be running out the door, quite literally, for his last day of work in Galway Garda Station on the 3rd of August.

“Rather than simply walking out the station doors for the final time, Brendan will be running a full marathon from his front door in Kinvara all the way to work, combining his passion for running with fundraising for two charities that are close to his heart – Little Blue Heroes and Galway RNLI.”

They continued: “The 42.2km route will go through Ardrahan, Kilcolgan, Clarinbridge, Oranmore, Renmore (NWR HQ), Lough Atalia, the Claddagh, Salthill Prom and into Mill Street for his last day after 31 years of service.

“He won't be running alone – two friends will accompany him for the full marathon, and anyone who would like to join him for a few kilometres along the route is more than welcome.

“Throughout his career, Brendan has proudly served communities across Ireland, including postings in Swords, Santry, GNDU, Store Street, Mayorstone Park, Henry Street, and finally Galway (Mill Street).
