Moycullen 64

UCC Demons 71

A poor second half performance saw Moycullen fall to UCC Demons last at the NUIG Kingfisher. The game was an extremely close affair from start to finish, and the home side had more than their fair share of chances to put the game away in the final period, but they were simply outworked by a gritty Demons side.

They did begin the game positively – an early UCC lead was quickly extinguished through some excellent defensive work. Isaiah Harris-Winn and Paddy Lyons pushed the ball on the fastbreak early and often, and their contributions game Moycullen the narrowest of leads by the end of the first quarter.

Harris-Winn continued to carry the scoring load for Moycullen in the second, and a deep three-pointer, and an acrobatic lay-up from him edged the home side ahead by 6 with a couple of minutes played.

In the closing minutes of the second, Cian Nihill hit a jumpshot, and a Paddy Lyons steal led to a sweet layup from Moycullen youngster Paul Kelly on the other end as Moycullen took a 38-34 lead into half-time.

UCC looked a different side in the second half, and they opened the third quarter with 7 unanswered points. Their star man, Irish international guard Kyle Hosford, only arrived at the game at half-time due to GAA commitments in Cork, and his introduction pushed UCC’s offense into a higher gear.

Conversely, Moycullen were now having to work very hard for scores, but Dylan Cunningham and Joseph Tummon each chipped in a pair of baskets toward the end of the third, which cut Demons’ lead back to two; and two free-throws from Tummon tied the game.
