It may be five years away, but already Galway West Fianna Fáil TD Éamon Ó Cuív is being tipped to mount a bid for the Irish presidency.

The bookmaker BoyleSports has offered odds for Dev Óg to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, Éamon de Valera, and become Irish President.

Éamó is a 12/1 shot to succeed his former Galway West colleague, Michael D Higgins, to the Áras.

Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness at 9/2 is the early favourite to replace Michael D in 2025. Others mentioned are RTÉ presenter, Miriam O’Callaghan, as well as Joe Brolly, the former footballer and GAA pundit. Former Taoisigh Bertie Ahern (10/1) and Enda Kenny (25/1) are also in the running, according to the bookies.

Dev Óg has certainly been upping his social media game in recent weeks. We’re particularly taken by updates about his daughter’s cat in Newtown, County Tipperary.

In one video uploaded on Twitter by Éamó, the cat is sitting on a garden wall and is being sniffed by the neighbour’s rabbit, in defiance of physical contact rules.

In another update, Dev Óg says that the rabbit “really doesn’t get the concept of social distancing” as it brazenly follows the cat round the butt of a tree.

“My daughter’s cat seems well-trained though and is taking the advice seriously,” he jokes, as the video shows the cat whacking the rabbit with its paw, and then scurrying away.

Michael D’s dogs, Bród and Síoda, are as popular as the President; but Dev Óg’s daughter’s cat, and her neighbour’s rabbit, certainly have potential as the next Áras animals.
