Another chance for Galway to turn the tables on Mayo

AFTER a long journey that encountered numerous setbacks, Galway’s minor footballers are in a fourth All-Ireland final in six years on Friday when facing another battle with rivals Mayo (Dr. Hyde Park, 7:15pm).

Alan Glynn’s team have already fallen twice to the Connacht champions during this campaign and will be outsiders even if their displays have improved on the national stage.

Following comprehensive wins over Roscommon and Sligo in April, the first setback for Galway was Mayo’s 1-15 to 0-4 win at Tuam Stadium in May  It put the green and red into the provincial decider and the Tribesmen then suffered another loss to Leitrim seven days later.

They were back on track with a 3-15 to 1-13 victory over Sligo in the Connacht semi-final. While their second meeting with Mayo didn’t deliver the desired result, Galway were just six points short in the Connacht final (0-13 to 0-7) on June 6.

“The final wasn’t at the level that we wanted but it was a slight improvement on the previous game against Mayo,” stated Glynn this week. “It wasn’t anywhere close to the standard we can play.

Galway looked a beaten docket with rampant Leinster champions Dublin on the horizon just six days later but with a new competition and a point to prove, they responded with a gritty and quality display.

The physical Metropolitans tried to bully the Westerners but paid the price.  Galway won 0-10 to 0-7 and it should have been more.
