Wide menu of options for farmers in AECM

IN terms of the new AECM (Agri-Environmental Climate Measure) scheme in Galway, only the Connemara area – as well as a swathe of south and south-east Galway – will qualify for participation in the co-operation measures.

Farmers in the rest of the county as well as Roscommon and a large chunk of south-east Mayo will only have the option of the individual ‘general measures’ section of the scheme.

In the general measure (individual) part of the scheme, the target – as set out in the Dept. of Agriculture’s CAP Strategic Plan (CSP) – is to ‘take in’ 30,000 farmers.

The CSP says that the maximum annual payment for those farmers would be €7,300 while they estimate that the average payment in those cases would work out at €5,000 per annum.

However, in the ‘co-operation areas’, the maximum annual payment could be as high as €10,500 per farmer with the likely average to work out at €7,000pa, according to the CSP. The target number of farmers nationally in that category is 20,000.

The Dept. of Agriculture has allowed for a total annual fund of €300 million for both schemes (split evenly, €150m each). The scheme will run for a five-year period – 2023 to 2027 inclusive with a total budget of €1.5 billion.
