Farmers urged to consider organic pathway

Farmers – and especially those with low enough acreages – have been encouraged to give serious consideration to the Organic Farming Scheme, which has an additional budget for 2021.
Following the re-opening of the scheme last month, with an additional budget of €4 million for this year, Minister of State, Pippa Hackett, said that she expected an additional 500 farmers to join up this year.
A total of 1,460 farmers took part in the last organic scheme agri-and financial advisory body, Ifac, have advised farmers to at least have a good look at the organics option.
Philip O’Connor, Head of Farm Supports at Ifac, said that farms under conversion to an organic set-up would qualify for a payment of €220 per hectare for the two-year conversion period and €170 per acre for farms that obtain organic status.
“I would encourage every farmer to inform themselves of the opportunities that the Organic Farming Scheme offers and give it full consideration,” said Philip O’Connor.
