A number of local greyhound owners have hit out at the Irish Greyhound Board's decision to discontinue the use of 700 yard traps at Galway Greyhound Stadium.

Two owners have been demonstrating at the venue this week in a bid to prevent the removal of the traps.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, the IGB says the decision was taken due to the extremely low usage of the 700 yard traps, only six times a year, and the unpopularity of this race distance.

It adds that this will result in a significant investment in the upgrade of existing traps infrastructure which will benefit all owners and trainers.

However local campaigner Brigid Frank says the decision will inconvenience many trainers and force them to travel elsewhere.
