Extra gardai to be deployed west of city

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The west side of the city is to see an increased Garda presence.

Chief Superintendent of Galway Garda Division, Tom Curley is re-organising staff to provide 2 extra community Gardaí in the Knocknacarra area.

It follows community meetings after a series of assaults and thefts in the Salthill and Knocknacarra areas in recent months.

Councillor Donal Lyons welcomed the additional Gardaí but said there were 4 Gardaí based in the area 5 years ago.

According to the Chief Superintendent Garda resources in the Galway Division have dropped from 15,300 to 13,200 in the past few years.

Chief Superintendent Curley says that he hopes the extra Gardaí for the west will be in place in the next few weeks.
