DEMOLITION DECISION ON FORMER SALTHILL BANK OVERTURNED

Galway Bay Fm Newsroom

Plans to demolish the former AIB at Upper Salthill have been turned down by the Planning Appeals Board.

The go-ahead was originally granted by the City Council, but this decision has now been overturned.

The plan was to demolish the existing two-storey building at the old AIB site at 177 Upper Salthill.

It would have been replaced with a mixed-use development comprising apartments, retail and a basement car park.

The City Council initially granted permission for the development with 20 conditions attached.

However a third-party appeal was lodged to An Bord Pleanála by local residents.

They are not opposed to development at the site but they felt the plans did not give enough information about the impact on their adjoining properties.

They were concerned that the proposed apartment block would break the building line and that a balcony would injure the amenity value of the nearby apartments.
