The debate on the controversial new bye-laws for two harbours in Inis Mor is underway at County Hall on Prospect Hill.

County councillors began discussing the proposed charges at Cill Ronain and Cill Einne harbours at county buildings in the past half hour.

180 islanders protested outside County Buildings for most of today in advance of today's expected vote on the harbour charges at the monthly council meeting.

Now around twenty Inis Mor residents are standing in the chamber waiting for the vote on the issue - the remainder have had to leave for the ferry home.

Islanders say the charges will have a detrimental effect on the island's future.
