Man accused of Galway rape asks for bail 'to see his wife'

Through the interpreter, the 25-year-old accused man asked if it was possible to be released on bail.
The garda investigation file in the case of two men accused of raping a woman in Galway City last month is with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), a court has heard.
A 27-year-old man and his 25-year-old co-accused appeared separately via video-link at Galway District Court and proceedings were explained with the help of an Arabic interpreter.
Each man is charged with the rape of a female on August at Ceannt Railway Station car-park, contrary to section 48 of the Offences Against The Person Act and section 2 (1) of the Criminal Law Rape Amendment Act 1981, as amended by section 21 of the Criminal Law Rape Amendment Act 1990.
The men are also charged with falsely imprisoning the same alleged victim on the same date and at the same location, an offence contrary to section 15 of the Non Fatal Offences Against The Person Act.
The 27-year-old accused man is also charged with rape, under section 4, of the same alleged victim, on August 1 at Ceannt Railway Station car-park.
That alleged offence is contrary to section 4 of the Criminal Law (Rape) Amendment Act 1990.
The case is subject to reporting restrictions and both cases were heard in-camera.
Sergeant Damien Prendergast told the court DPP's directions are awaited but he had spoken to the investigation team who confirmed the file is with the DPP.
Sgt Prendergast sought the consent of both men to be further remanded in custody beyond the maximum two week period.
Both men were previously refused bail in the district court and have applied to the High Court for bail.
The interpreter explained the State's application to both men who did not consent to a four week remand.
Judge Fiona Lydon noted the accused's response and remanded them in custody to appear via video link on September 21.
Defence barrister Donal Cronin BL (instructed by solicitor, Sarah Ryan) told the court that bail applications for both men are before the High Court and are due to be reached this week.
Judge Lydon told both men that if they achieve bail they must appear in person on the next date.
Through the interpreter, the 25-year-old accused man asked if it was possible to be released on bail.
He said he is recently married and wants to see his wife.
