Man accused of assaulting person with hurley at Galway Shopping Centre

The State objected to bail at the accused’s first court appearance
A man accused of using a hurley to assault another man at a Galway Retail Park has taken up High Court bail, a court has heard.
Richard O'Connell (49), with an address at Claí Mór, Monivea Road, appeared at Galway District Court, having previously been remanded in custody at his first court appearance, when he was not legally represented in court.
O'Connell is charged that on June 22 at Wellpark Retail Park Shopping Centre, he assaulted a man causing him harm.
This is contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.
He is further charged with possession of a hurley with intent to injure another person, contrary to Section 9 (5) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.
The court was told O’Connell has taken up bail set down by the High Court and could be remanded on continuing bail.
Sergeant Claire Heneghan asked that the case be put to October 7.
The State objected to bail at the accused’s first court appearance when Garda Edward Harty told the court it will be alleged that at approximately 8.37pm on June 22, the accused used a hurley to attack another man, causing ‘multiple breaks to his wrist’ in the process.
Garda Harty said it will be alleged the assault was ‘unprovoked’ in nature.
The court was told that a person convicted of assault causing harm at District Court level faces a maximum sentence of twelve months in prison, and that a conviction in the Circuit Court carries a maximum sanction of five years.
