The new owner said the last minute postponement was through no fault of his own

A new Galway pub’s opening was postponed last minute as excited villagers will have to wait another while for a sup.

The village of Aughrim was giddy with excitement over the news that a closed down bar was reopening under new ownership on Friday after a long wait.

Renamed the Inn 1691 after The Battle Of Aughrim, one of Ireland’s worst historical fights where 7,000 soldiers were killed, sadly new owner Eamonn encountered a speed wobble outside of his control which halted the reopening on Friday.

He did ensure punters that a new date was coming soon, however.

He said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances and through no fault of our own, we sadly had to postpone the opening of Inn 1691.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused. We will notify you of a new opening date as soon as it is available.”

One happy local said they were “over the moon” to hear that Aughrim had its pub back once again and was happy to wait another while to get inside.

They said: “I want to wish Eamonn and all the staff the very best of luck with the new venture. I have known Eamon for a lot of years and I have absolutely no doubt he will make a right go of it.

“It will be great to see the place buzzing again. Please give him all the support you can and tell your friends.”

Elsewhere, a buyer is wanted to restore and reopen another rural Galway pub which has been closed for 12 years.

The Phoenix Inn in Kiltormer has been shut to the public since 2014 but has been put on the market by Joseph Naughton Auctioneers.

It can be bought separately or as one lot - €150,000 for the premises and an extra €50,000 for the liquor licence on top of that.

The Auctioneers describe it as “a rare opportunity to acquire a substantial two-storey former public house in the heart of East Galway”.

The Auctioneers does say that the above apartment has been vacant for 15 years and would need refurbishment.

They continue: “This prominent village-centre property offers excellent potential for refurbishment, conversion, or redevelopment, subject to the necessary planning permissions and statutory approvals.

“The property has been closed since approximately 2014 and presents a superb opportunity for purchasers, developers, and investors seeking a project with significant potential.”

The former licensed premises comprises a traditional bar and lounge layout including: Public lounge area; bar counter; toilet facilities; spacious rear lounge/function room and additional toilet accommodation.

A self-contained three-bedroom apartment is located at first-floor level, accessed via an external steel staircase to the rear. The accommodation comprises: Three bedrooms; kitchen/living area and bathroom.
