County Council briefed on national fire safety policy

Galway Bay fm newsroom - An area risk categorisation is to be carried out on all 10 fire stations in Galway to determine if current arrangements are adequate.

The issue was raised at this afternoon's meeting of Galway County Council where members were briefed on a major national document on fire safety.

Director of services for emergency services Eugene Cummins outlined the implications of the report 'Keeping communities safe'

The risk categorisation judges the fire station ground on criteria such as population, annual service demand and number of dwellings in the station ground.

Based on these criteria, the city brigade would have a risk designation of A2 or B1 and require two more full time pumps.

This could mean re-locating the current facility, but nothing can be confirmed until an assessment is carried out in full.

Galway city and county councils are one single shared fire and civil protection service with the county council as the lead fire authority since the 1980s.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Eugene Cummins says he expects analysis to be carried out in the next few months.
