County council approves speed limit changes

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A raft of speed limit changes on roads around the county have been approved by county councillors.

One of these involves increasing the speed limit on a section of the R339 from Galway airport to Ballintemple from 60kmph to 80kmph.

Other changes involve reducing the speed limit at the N18 Labane from 100kmph to 60kmph, and at the Athenry motorway link road moving the 50kmph speed limit out to the new ring road junctions.

However, there is some concern that propsed changes to areas such as Kiltartan, Ballygar and Milltown have not yet been assessed by the NRA.

It was agreed this week that Galway county council write to the Transport Minister asking he give full powers to local authorities to bring in speed limit reviews in conjunction with local Gardaí and councillors without having to consult the NRA.

Councillor Jim Cuddy, who proposed the motion, says the NRA should be taken out of the process altogether.
