Councillors to receive report on impact of Property Tax reduction

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Councillors have requested a comprehensive report on the consequences of a proposed 15% reduction in Local Property Tax. Councillor Dermot Connolly has proposed that Galway County Council uses its powers under current legislation to make the reduction. Speaking at this week's meeting of the council, Head of Finance Gerard Mullarkey, says the motion cannot be considered until July 1st due to statutory regulations. Any change agreed by the council would have to be submitted to Revenue by September 30th. A 15% reduction in Local Property Tax would see an estimated reduction of 2.1 million euro to the council's budget. Councillors remain divided on the issue, with some raising concerns about a loss of services if the tax is cut. A full report on the implications of the move will be provided to councillors before the September meeting.
