Council cracks down on roadside car sales

The common practice of car owners advertising their vehicles for sale on the side of the road is to be outlawed by Galway County Council – coupled with a threat to impound cars and sell them on themselves.

The local authority have issued public notices advising the public that it is illegal to erect signs on public roads – and this also stretches vehicles bearing a ‘For Sale’ sign on a windscreen.

However, Cllr Pete Roche has described their actions as ‘using a sledgehammer to crack a nut’ and said that the County Council should have ‘bigger fish to fry’ by apprehending illegal dumpers, or sorting out parking and traffic issues.

Galway County Council officials have warned that they may, without notice, arrange for the removal and storage of any unauthorised signs or vehicles.

They say that they will also recoup the removal costs from the person claiming the unauthorised item.

But they added that, in certain circumstances, the Council may arrange for the disposal of the unauthorised item.

They also say that anyone who places a sign on the side of the road or places a vehicle for sale on a hard shoulder is liable to be prosecuted before the courts.
