14 million euro is owed to University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park Hospital from private health insurance companies.

The figure was revealed to members of the Regional Health Forum in the city this week.

However, in response to a question from Chairman of the forum, Councillor Padraig Conneely, Clinical Director for GUH and Roscommon, David O' Keefe stated that 7 million euro is with insurers awaiting payment.

A further 7 million euro is being processed internally, with over 5 million euro worth of claims awaiting a consultant signature.

David O' Keefe said that the money owed to GUH had reduced by 7 million euro since the last forum meeting and said the pressure on hospital consultants had worked.
