South Mayo plumps for O'Mahony

South Mayo, the new part of Galway West constituency, plumped for Fine Gael’s John O’Mahony, tallies show.
Unsurprisingly, the Mayo TD, who switched constituencies following the boundary redraw, polled strongest of all 20 candidates in South Mayo.
O’Mahony took 45% of the first preferences in Neale; 50% in Roundford NS; and over 50% in many of the Ballinrobe boxes.
Fianna Fail’s Éamon Ó Cuív polled strongly in South Mayo, as well, and so too did his running mate, County Councillor Mary Hoade.
Councillor Hoade took 25% in Shrule and Deputy Ó Cuív was on 28% in Roundford.
The remaining all-Galway based candidates struggled to make any impression in Mayo.
O’Mahony is on 7.3%, according to the latest tally of 94% of boxes opened. That puts him in the hunt for a final seat if the transfers go his way. The former All-Ireland winning Galway football manager should be transfer friendly.
Cllr Hoade is on 3.3% but Ó Cuív on 15.3% will top the poll.
