A long running Galway family business has shut down closure speculation with a strong and firm four word answer.

Walsh’s Bakery and Coffee Shop in Clifden felt they needed to come out and defend their business after online forums ran with rumours of its end.

Talk had been rife locally that the business, which has been been opened for 73 years, was closing down - something they have described as untrue and a downright lie stating firmly: “We are not closing”.

The Walsh family have been providing the west of Galway with delicious baked goods and hot deli food since 1953 when it was founded by Tom and Una Walsh.

They turned their small bakery into the business behemoth it has become today with the help of their seven children - which is now led by their son Cathal, wife Joan and daughter Roisin.

Speaking previously about the family business, Cathal said that it is embedded in the business and is “crucial to keep doing what we do”.

Sticking with business in the Connemara region, throughout closure after closure around Galway city and county, another local family has lasted the test of troubling times to be a business in Ireland.

The clothing and gift department store Standún’s has been a landmark in Spiddal since it was first founded and opened by May and Máirtín Standún in 1946.

So it’s only right that the three generations of the Standún family are gearing up for massive celebrations all this month to mark the massive moment of being 80 years in business.

The family, alongside a mix of loyal customers and tourists, raised a glass to celebrate the eight decade feat on Sunday as well as celebrating continued success at their other stores in Oughterard and Birr.

While there were no major stars this time around, their 70th celebrations brought out an array of local celebrities including Ryan Tubridy.

After posing for countless photographs and selfies with fans, Tubridy interviewed members of the Standún family ten years ago, including Donal Standún, who ran the business until 2012 when the baton was passed on to his daughter Cliona, a grandchild of the founders.
