Eleven large urban areas in the country don't meet Environmental Protection Agency standards for wastewater treatment including Clifden.

According to the latest report from the EPA, the old plant in Clifden is impacting on bathing water.

Secondary treatment was first required for Clifden in 2005 and the environmental watchdog estimates that will be completed next year.

The EPA report also shows that some smaller urban areas, such as Kinvara and Spiddal have no sewerage scheme at all.
