CLIFDEN BEACH ONE OF TWO NATIONWIDE TO FAIL BATHING WATER TEST

Date Published: 03-May-2012
Clifden beach is one of just two nationwide to fail the EU bathing water quality test.
This is despite there being an increase in the number of bathing areas around Ireland that meet mandatory EU standards.
According to a 2011 overview from the Environmental Protection Agency, 98 and a half per cent met the standards - that's up slightly from the previous year, when it stood at 97 per cent.
Just two of 135 areas tested didn't make the grade - Clifden Beach in Connemara and White Strand at Miltown Malbay in County Clare.
However it's hoped that Clifden's standard will improve in the near future, thanks to remedial works at a nearby wastewater treatment plant.
