The organisers of the Galway city marathon have called off this year's race after a row with the City Council over red tape.

In a statement published on the galwaycitymarathon.com website, organisers are blaming city council officials and former mayor Cllr Michael Crowe for putting too many obstacles in their path.

It was due to be held on August 28th, a week before the Ironman competition.

But organisers Richard and Paul Donovan made the decision to cancel the city marathon yesterday because the type of traffic management plan the city council wanted would have cost them too much.

This year's race would have brought over 2,000 athletes to the city, along with a boost to the local economy.
