Galway City Manager, Joe O' Neill says the only option to try and alleviate traffic congestion in the city is to "manage traffic flow".

Last night, ten city councillors voted to replace two more city roundabouts with traffic light junctions, with five voting against.

It's been described as a 'leap of faith' by those in favour, who admit the N6 multi- modal plan is not a solution but a way of managing traffic in Galway.

However, the removal of the Font roundabout at the Tuam road and the Morris roundabout at Ballybane, can only go ahead if certain criteria is met.

City councillors must hear a detailed presentation on traffic management plans.

Secondly, the successful tender for the urban traffic control centre, which is expected to be decided on shortly, must give a presentation to city council in October.
