City Hall refurbishment to begin later this month

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A successful tender has been selected to upgrade the council chamber furniture at City Hall.

The new furniture contract is valued at 37 thousand euro and is required to accommodate an increase in councillors after the local elections in May.

The wider refurb of the chamber on College Road will cost in the region of 115 thousand euro.

A spokesperson for City Hall says the chamber has not been upgraded since 1985.

It will be out of commission from the end of this month until the first meeting of the new council sits in June.

It's understood arrangements are now being made to hold meetings in an alternative space in City Hall during this time, on an interim basis.

The city council will increase in size by three extra councillors after the local elections in May.
