City Council cuts quarter of workforce since 2010

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway City Council has lost 26 percent of its staff over the past four years. Speaking at last evening's meeting of the local authority, Chief Executive Brendan McGrath revealed that almost 110 jobs have been cut, and services have been impacted as a result. The issue was raised after councillors criticised what they described as ‘shoddy' attempts at maintenance of public green spaces. Councillors Declan McDonnell, Billy Cameron and Padraig Conneely said the quality of work being carried out in the city's green areas is unacceptable, and grass cutting needs to be more frequent. Brendan McGrath says the public service embargo has put the council in a difficult position.
