This September marked the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s iconic album Nevermind, an unquestionable classic containing songs like Smells like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Lithium and Come as You Are which still sound fresh and urgent 20 years later.

To celebrate this anniversary, the Salad Circus and The Converse All-Stars, along with some guests, will play the best loved tunes of Nirvana in Kelly’s of Bridge Street, tonight, Friday. Proceeds from the concert will go to the Autism Specific Class of St Nicholas’ National School.

Nevermind was the second album from Nirvana, who were formed in 1987 by bassist Kurt Novoselic and singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain. Dave Grohl joined the band in 1990 and the following year they recorded the album that made them superstars. By January 1992, Nevermind had replaced Michael Jackson’s Dangerous at the top of the Billboard charts.

Nevermind arrived at a time when overblown hair-rock dominated the music scene – Axl Rose had gone into the full-on diva mode that would eventually prove his downfall. Kurt Cobain’s songs were raw, but joyful – and memorable – at the same time.

Cobain who had problems with heroin addiction and depression, had issues in dealing with fame and the way his songs were represented. He took his own life in 1994. But the songs have lived on and the night in Kelly’s will allow fans to celebrate some truly spectacular music.Doors 9pm, tickets €10. Followed by Shack Up with Graham Dolan.
