CASH FOR CANS BRANDED BAD VALUE FOR MONEY

Date Published: 05-Aug-2011
The 'Cash for Cans' scheme in operation in the city has been criticised by the public for not being value for money.
The scheme has come under fire following concerns that the council pays only 4 euro for each bag of cans, and does not take the size of that bag into account.
The City Council hoped that paying people for bags of aluminium cans collected from around the city would tackle the litter problem.
Spokesperson for Galway City Council Garry McMahon says that staff are advising people to split their cans into seperate bags if needs be.
Independent City Councillor Catherine Connolly says there are operational problems and they will arise in the first progress report.
