A Galway Senator has called for a debate on peaceful protest following the removal of the Occupy Galway encampment today.

Speaking in the Seanad this afternoon, Senator Trevor O' Clochartaigh requested Justice Minister Alan Shatter speak on the matter.

Up to 40 Gardaí moved in on the Eyre Square camp shortly after 4 this morning and removed six protestors.

One of the protestors, a man in his 20s was arrested but released soon after.

City Council staff have now completely dismantled the 300 square metre camp, that the group had been living in for almost 7 months.
